Groningen üniversitesinin 11 fakültesi, 9 yüksek lisans okulu, 27 araştırma merkezi ve enstitüsü ve 175’ten fazla derece programı vardır.
Üniversite 1614 yılında Groningen şehrinde ilk etapta kolej olarak kurulmuştur .

Groningen şehri olağanüstü bir öğrenci hayatına sahiptir ve Hollanda’nın öğrenci şehri olarak bilinir; Şehir sakinlerinin yaklaşık üçte biri ya Groningen Üniversitesi’nde ya da Hanze Uygulamalı Bilimler Üniversitesi’nde bulunmuştur . Groningen öğrencilerin etrafında şekillenen bir şehirdir . Üniversitede ayrıca, üyeleri için sosyal etkinlikler düzenleyen çok sayıda öğrenci topluluğu ve çoğunlukla belirli fakülteler ve kurslarla ilgilenen öğrenci ve çalışma dernekleri vardır.
